Happy New You

Updated: Jan 31

In consulting, contracting, and freelancing, it's rare to pause and congratulate yourself at the end of a role. Oftentimes, the pressure to move on is relentless, you're always focused on the next task, and let’s face it, things don’t always wrap up neatly at the end of a business transformation role. In the case of my last contract, things did wrap up nicely. It lasted a lot longer than previous roles. I built great relationships, added value by utilising my strongest skills, drove innovation and creativity, learned a lot of new skills, and built up some brilliant tech knowledge. I forget that many other people don’t know what it is like to tread this fragile career rolercoaster. When an interim role comes to an end you are essentially thrown back on the job heap, not knowing when the next cheque is coming in, and even if you have prepared yourself for a few months off (financially and psychologically), it doesn’t take long for rejection or self-doubt to kick in. It’s a typical human response. In light of this I have created a few mechanisms that help me manage the wobbly bits and the self-doubt Hope you find them useful.

1. Rejection is Growth

·      Rejection is part of the process, not a reflection on you

·      Every “no” brings you closer to a “yes.”

2. Focus on the wins

·      Keep a journal or blog. Record positive feedback, and achievements.

·      Reflect, reread your CV, gain confidence from your capabilities.

3. Getting a job is part of the job

·      Create a jubhunt routine. Set goals, keep a schedule.

·      Balance it with exercise, hobbies, time with family and friends.

4. Yay! Personal Development Time

·      Learn new skills or update certifications, network, attend webinars

·      Be a mentor to other career changers, freelancers, small business owners

5. Support is there if you need it

·      Reach out to fellow contractors, entrepreneurs, or consultants for advice and encouragement.

·      Don’t hesitate to seek support from friends, family or professionals if self-doubt feels overwhelming.

Remember, gaps between contracts are normal and often offer valuable time to recharge and refocus.
